Do You Have the Right Kind of Wisdom?

tritipHere is what we are discovering about God’s wisdom. God’s wisdom finds its beginning in my life when God is in the right place in my life and God’s wisdom enters my life when I ask. But for many there are two fundamental flaws in our understanding of God’s wisdom.

Flaw #1  Wisdom is about a way of thinking not acting.

A lot of people believe wisdom is primarily about a way thinking and perceiving the world.  We think it is about enlightenment and in some sense being intellectually clever. Jesus gave us an awesome (and wise) statement about wisdom when he was on the earth. “Wisdom is proved right by her actions.” In these seven words, Jesus forever linked a person’s actions and a person’s wisdom. Jesus reminds us that if wisdom does not affect the way we act, then it might not be proved to be wisdom after all.

Flaw #2 God’s wisdom is situational

In a lot of peoples minds, wisdom has been boiled down to what car to buy, who to marry, which house to purchase, this job or that job, choosing the right words in a conflict, dating relationships and where to go to college… In the bible, wisdom is about applying God’s thinking to all our way of living. It is not applying God’s thinking to a few key decisions we might need to make.  All of life needs God’s wisdom. No part of our lives is exempt from the need of Godly wisdom. When I approach God’s wisdom as situational, I run the risk of vacillating between my wisdom and God’s wisdom. That is a huge mistake. In describing my wisdom verses God’s wisdom the bible puts it this way in James 3.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

In a nutshell here is what James says. When wisdom is situational it makes us prideful. We think we are smart, wise, and clever and we begin to boast. This kind of boasting and pride leads to envy, selfishness and creates disorder, opening the door for all kinds of bad behavior.  Some will lie, fight, gossip, cheat, deceive, use others and even kill.  Pride makes us fools even when we think we are wise.  This wisdom is not from God.

God’s wisdom transforms our thinking and in doing so transforms how we act.  When God’s wisdom is in full swing in our lives humility becomes the operating system of our life.  Most of our relationships will improve drastically with God’s wisdom, it brings peace and kindness.  This wisdom stuff is really challenging me.  I think I should stop and talk about cooking tri tip.  As always, thanks for playing. Off… we go now.
