Everything Matters – RE

ripple_effectRipple Effect – a spreading series of consequences caused by a single event. Visually seen when someone tosses a rock into a pond and the ripples move outward.  Did you know every life has a ripple effect? It’s true.  I love Oakland A’s baseball – my dad.  I love reading – my mom.  I love to eat toast and eggs – my grandfather.  I follow Christ – my family.  This is the ripple effect of their lives in mine.  Ripple Effect – a spreading series of consequences caused by a single event.

Some of their ripple effect was intentional.  Be a gentleman, speak with respect, work hard, give your best to what you are doing…  All lessons taught to me on purpose.  Some of their ripple effect was unintentional.  Love flavor filled spicy foods, drink coffee black, vote a certain way…  Pieces of life I caught along the way, the unintentional ripple effect from my family to me.    Ripple Effect – a spreading series of consequences caused by a single event.

What if we were born to make waves?  What if our birth marked the moment we were dropped into life’s pond and every since we have been making ripples in all directions? What if God was so smart he put us where he put us because only we can cause the ripples we cause?  What if it was God’s idea all along for each one of his kids to make a ripple effect and to this point he has been preparing us?  Ripple Effect – a spreading series of consequences caused by a single event.

Daily I see the ripple effect our lives make.  I see it in the service of people at the church I pastor.  People genuinely find Christ’s love because of how God uses these lives to ripple in others.  I see the ripple effect my wife makes with our kids.  What she does in their lives is beyond great.  Her life is making our kids great people.   I see it in adverse too.  People who are angry because others were angry, people who do not trust because others were untrustworthy, people who hit because they were hit…  Ripple Effect – a spreading series of consequences caused by a single event.

Crazy thought!  We might just see life wrong or poorly. One of God’s greatest gifts is the ability to choose the ripple effect we are making? If (since) this is true the stakes just got higher.  Everything matters doesn’t it? How we treat strangers, our habits in dealing with stress, how we spend our time, what we do on purpose to represent Christ to your co-workers and bosses… Nothing is neutral. Not our words, our attitudes, our actions, our grudges, our forgiveness, our friendship, our kindness…  Every interaction has a ripple effect. The barista at Starbucks, the server at Chili’s, the people in traffic, those at the grocery store, our neighbors, our friends, our family… We are making a ripple effect.    Ripple Effect – a spreading series of consequences caused by a single event.

Jesus once said, every word we speak will matter so much that He will make us give an account for them… One writer said that everything we do matters so much that we will receive our reward in heaven because of what we do.  In essence, God is going to ask me how I used this gift, the ability to choose the kind of ripple effect I make.  Ripple Effect – a spreading series of consequences caused by a single event.

Choose the ripple effect or the one you make might not be the one you want to make.  Off… we go now.

  1. Amen to that, life is all about the choices we make. Wish I could sit down and talk to you about some of it

  2. Amen, pastor! The Gospel of the lives of communities of the Living God, though imperfect or from varying denominations, but seeking God in one contrite Spirit, closely integrated and relational to the point of knowing & challenging each other at a deeper level has the potential to create ripples that will be like tsunamis. Tsunamis that will bring fear of One True God. That is what I dream.

Thankful for the devotion that you posted in the blog.

  3. Absolute favorite thus far! We know your ripple effect all the way here in Texas. And I thank God every single day that I can call you my brother!

  4. Thanks Leonard. Great reminder of the importance of every one of our actions. For sure, everything does matter. I’ll add two thoughts.

First, I’m grateful for grace, because sometimes there is redemption from the natural consequences of a very stupid action on my part. Relationships that should be broken are sustained, ministry survives blunders, God uses us in spite of ourselves.

Second, consistency matters. I doubt, Leonard, if you love eating eggs and toast if your grandfather had only made it for you once. I think I got hung up on the “single event” part of the definition of ripple effect.

  5. Thanks for the reminder and the encouragement. Have a Blessed day, that I hope ripples into a Blessed Week! 🙂
