Do you know what today is?

Do you know what today is? Depending on when you read this it could be Tuesday… or Wednesday… or Saturday… But that is not really the question I am asking. Do you know what today is? January 26th, or 29th, or again, depending on when you are reading this… you do the math. But that is not really the question I am asking. The question is. Do you know what today is? It is Eddie Van Halen’s birthday, General Douglas MacArthur’s birthday or depending on when you read this is could be your birthday or anniversary. But that is not really the question I am asking.

Here is a question I hear from people all the time. “What is God’s will for my life?” They say, “I wonder what he wants me to do.” They ask, “How do I find God’s will?”

Could it be that we might be approaching this kind of backwards? This approach has led us to parsing up the will of God into categories. Perfect Will – when we do exactly what God wants… Permissive Will – When God allows us to do what we want within the context of not sinning. Out of His Will – when we do what God does not want done. All of these approaches can end up leaving us feeling like finding God’s will is a cosmic game of “pin the tail on the Donkey” with the hopes we get it mostly right.

What if God’s will were approached as something more like an opportunity than a mystery? What if God’s will were approached more like a practical, “wonder what God wants done” rather than “what God wants me to do” kind of a tack?

Can you think of anything right now that God might want done? Let’s do a little brainstorming. Is there someone you know that needs kindness? Do you ever pass by anyone who is hungry? Is there a place where you have been resisting growth? Are your relationships in order? Is there anyone who you need to forgive? Are you as familiar with the bible as you should be? How is the prayer life? These are not things that lead us to God’s will, they are God’s will. Does your neighbor know that God loves them and that they can be forgiven? Do you serve your family? Does your church fully benefit from the gifts God has given you? Here is a really cool way to look at “God’s will.”

God’s will is the opportunity God presents me moment by moment to partner with Him in doing what He wants done.

So let’s go back to the question. Do you know what today is? Today is the day you have a chance to partner with God. Today is the day you have been presented an opportunity to impact eternity, change a life, sow a seed, water a seed, be kind in the name of Christ, help someone, forgive someone and show love to someone. Now that is doing the will of God! Not a mystery. Not a secret. It is a partnership had only by those who choose it. Do you know what today is? It is our chance to partner with God. Hey, I am out of here, I think I see something He wants done, till next time. Off… we go now.

One Response to “Do you know what today is?”

  1. Back when I was sick, I had to be in bed a lot. What God wanted was for me to trust Him with the timing of my healing. He wanted me to be patient, pray for others, rest. It wasn’t fun and it didn’t change the world, but it sure did change me.
