My New Prayer…

Replaying childhood phrases is something that I am sure we all do.  Some of the ones I remember are… “I know you are but what am I?” or “I’m rubber, your glue…” you know the rest.  But there is one phrase that I think every home with multiple kids knows.  It was said in our home as a kid, I have heard my kids say it too. “You’re not the boss of me!”

“You’re not the boss of me!” is a statement we make to siblings when we do not want them telling us what to do.  I tried it on my parents once and the end result was literally an END (rear) result.  One of my kids said that to me a few years back and my response was… “You want to test that theory?”  A quick “no” was all that was required and received.

(Confession time)

As I got older, I realized something.  The sentiment that drove this statement from my heart to my lips did not go away once I learned the consequences of verbalizing it.  The sentiment was expressed in other ways.  I slacked off, I pretended not to hear, I ignored, I just did not do what was asked… I lived “you’re not the boss of me” even though I did not say it.

When I said “you’re not the boss of me” to my brother, I justified it.  When I said “you’re not the boss of me” to my parents, I excused it.  The problem I have is that I keep saying “you’re not the boss of me” to God.  Oh, I don’t say it in words, just in the passive aggressive ways.  I slack off, I pretend not to hear, I ignore, I just do not do what was is being asked…

I realize no one else is like this, sorry to post something so irrelevant.  But for me, this is what I hear God saying to me these days.  “

Be diligent (give a care filled effort) to pay attention to ME (God.)  My love for you is immeasurable, my knowledge of you is complete and my power is infinite.  Surrender is the best life you can live.” My prayer today?  You ARE the boss of me.. OFF… we go now.
