Do you suffer from FIC? Faith Inferiority Complex

In my last post I shared about a series of talks on prayer I am giving at my church  These talks were shaped by a survey I took at church on what people most commonly pray.  One of the most common prayers was for faith.  People are asking God to give them faith and to help them with faith.

Many people have what I call FICFIC is a Faith Inferiority Complex.  Do you have an FIC?  Take this little test to see.

  1. When you read or hear bible stories about people whose faith helped them kill giants, walk on water, heal the sick and conquer armies… Do you ever feel like your faith sucks?
  2. When you hear about Mother Teresa and all she did for the poor and sick and orphans… Do you ever feel like your faith sucks?
  3. When you think about the time you spend with God, in prayer, in the bible and serving other people… Do you ever feel like your faith sucks?
  4. When you see God answer other peoples prayers while yours go unanswered… Do you ever feel like your faith sucks?

If you answered “yes” to one or more of these 4 questions, then congratulations; You probably suffer from FIC.

FIC is what happens when a person believes what God did through or for others could never be done through or for them.

FIC is dangerous because with FIC, we settle.  We settle for a small life and not ABUNDANT life.  FIC fills us with guilt, saps our spiritual strength and destroys our desire and ability to be contagious for Christ.  FIC passes anemic faith to our kids. FIC causes those we know who do not know Christ to deem Him powerless or irrelevant because of how we interact with God and life.  FIC robs us of  joy, hope, courage, and a confidence in God’s love, power and character.

If you or someone you know suffers from FIC, keep reading.

Romans 12:3 states that we have each been given a “measure of faith.” In simple terms, every one of us has enough faith to do and be what God wants.  Is God asking you to forgive someone?  You already have enough faith for that!  Is God asking you to serve Him?  You already have enough faith for that!  Is parenting getting the best of you?  You already have enough faith for that!  Is your marriage wearing you out?  Is your health, your emotions, your work, your life larger than you feel like you can handle?  Good news!  You already have enough faith for your life!

But if I have enough faith already, why the FIC?  It is because we too often see faith as a means of rescue in our lives.  For example, if I am sick and have enough faith… Viola!  God will heal “rescue” me.  If I am in financial trouble and have enough faith… Viola!  God will meet my needs. “rescued me”  The problem is that not only is that not biblical, it is a recipe for a severely warped view of God and a deadly case of FIC. Read this next sentence 3 times over… Faith is not a means of RESCUE. As we follow Christ, God does not use faith to “rescue” us but rather to guide us.

If you want to know what that means or find out how to overcome FIC, join us Sunday morning @ Bayside Central.  814 Darling Way, Roseville 95678.  Till then, Off… we go now.

  1. Great words Leonard. After traveling the past few years, I’ve begun to wonder if that rescue mentality is distinctively American. What do you think?

I don’t know if anyone traveling with you to Swaziland suffers from FIC, but if they do, I’m very sure that they’ll come home in recovery.
