TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER…

Do you remember the old Sci-Fi movies where someone would say in an alien or robotic voice… “Take me to your leader”?  In a nutshell this is what my faith is all about.  Taking people to my leader.  In order for this to happen, something must first occur.  I must know and follow my leader, all the way.  This is how we have been living this out in the Lee family.

The winds of change have blown over the Lee family.  As of January 9th, 2011 I have resigned as the pastor of my church.  The details are not too important, I can assure you that it is not some moral or mid life crisis. I am not burnt out or even tired of ministry, in fact I am so very excited about the adventure God has us on at this moment.  Merrily and I are even more in love than we were 22 years ago and our family is as solid as ever.  It was a long and prayerful process of discerning and following the calling of God for our family. In one sense we are playing a “real life” game of follow the leader.   As I walked through the process, a song from my youth kept playing itself in the little corner of my mind reserved for music.

The song was written by Fanny Crosby, who at 6 weeks of age was blinded by the error of a doctor.  If you have a history in the church at all you have most likely sung a song she wrote.  This song in particular spoke to me for two reasons.  First it is a statement of how I want to live.  Joyfully lead by God. I hope and pray that my life and my family will always possess the courage to let the leadership of Christ be the strongest part of our lives.

Second, the simplicity of faith that comes through in this song.  We live in a world of steps, keys, ingredients and decisions. I am not knocking this, but sometimes it just boils down to saying to Jesus… you lead and I will follow. This is really at the core of our decision to enter a new season.  Below are the words; enjoy and OFF… we go now.

All the way my Savior leads me;
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy,
Who through life has been my Guide?
Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort,
Here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well;
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well.

All the way my Savior leads me,
Cheers each winding path I tread;
Gives me grace for every trial,
Feeds me with the living Bread.
Though my weary steps may falter,
And my soul athirst may be,
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! A spring of joy I see;
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! A spring of joy I see.

All the way my Savior leads me
O the fullness of His love!
Perfect rest to me is promised
In my Father’s house above.
When my spirit, clothed immortal,
Wings its flight to realms of day
This my song through endless ages—
Jesus led me all the way;
This my song through endless ages—
Jesus led me all the way.

PS  For those that like answers and details, I can only say the next season is not completely clear as of yet.  Who our leader is, this is crystal clear, what our mission is, this is also crystal clear… Taking others to our leader.  But for now, I do not know for sure what that looks like.  Keep us in your prayers.

  1. Thank you for leading us all to greater faith and confidence in the Lord Who leads.

  2. You are in our prayers! We sang this in church Saturday night and the words resounded – we’ve followed His lead and watched Him do – and He continues to do – all things well through this season of change. We love you guys and are excited to see what God does next…

  4. Wow! Praying for you on this new adventure in Him.

  5. We will keep you in our prayers! Thanks for your faithful service all these years!

  6. Leonard – you are a model leader and follower for many people, even those who follow you through cyberspace. I know there are many exciting things awaiting in the next chapter of kingdom work.

  7. Hey Leonard,
    I will be praying for you, Merrily, Katey and Mason as you step through the next doors.
    I love the Chris Tomlin version of the song – it’s such an encouragement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKkDzII4s4s

    We love you guys.

  8. I’m excited for your future as well, Lee peeps. One thing if anything you’ve always encouraged and inspired me to think outside my comfort zone. Not any title or category I’d put myself in, but what is GOD’S category for me? What are the gifts and abilities he’s given me? And what encompasses my mission in life according to these things? I’ve come recently (with sandi’s help) to realize that I’m about Healing, Hope and Inspiration, so whatever I’m doing now I make sure fits into one of those categories whether job stuff or otherwise, and I listen for where He wants me to give those things, and it’s been amazing! Love you both and I pray all good things for you and your family Leonard. In Christ, Natalie

  9. Leonard,

    Thank you so much for all the encouragement and inspiration you have given to me — it has been a privilege serving with you and getting to know you and Merrily a little better. It is so awesome that you are following the Lord with this step of faith and I will pray for him to guide you clearly. Thank you for your blog and all that you share through it and showing your desire to reflect Christ and follow him!

    Angela
